Anyone who has been to a supermarket should easily decipher that one of the most profitable foods (based on variety alone) is the bagged chips category.  And it also doesn’t take a genius to figure out that 99% of them are not good for you.  From their high-calorie to their high-salt to their obscene fat content, these bagged chips are mostly garbage turned into food.

Having said that, the times they are a-changing and many chip purveyors have started offering some better options.  Here at Menos Malo, we are particularly fond of the new Tostitos Artisan Recipe chips, but you can’t really go wrong with Terra Original Exotic Vegetable Chips or Beanitos Black Bean Chipotle BBQ Chips or Food Should Taste Good Sweet Potato Tortilla Chips.

According to this article in hola.com it has once again been proven in yet another scientific study that the moderate consumption of beer or wine is good for your health.

In this particular study, they have identified that people will see benefits in their bones with moderate consumption.  However, the opposite is true with excessive consumption of alcohol.

One Glass of Wine or Beer Per Day

These bones don't have any excess alcohol in them.

Menos Malo Bottom Line: Enjoy a drink a day for strong bones, exceed that moderate amount on a daily basis and watch the same bones become brittle.  Your choice.

We at Menos Malo are huge fans of the Wendy’s double hamburger.  We have been eating it since they first opened in Puerto Rico way back in the 80’s.

Having said that, it has come recently – not really, we have known for a while now – come to our attention that the double hamburger is just not a very healthy option.  Particularly if you add cheese.

Luckily, Wendy’s does offer some of the best Menos Malo options of any fast food restaurant.

Let the following table show you one of our favorites:

Even with the advent of Netflix and other home-based alternatives, we at Menos Malo love going to the theater to see the newest movies that Hollywood puts out.

In particular, if its on a digital projection screen – because the difference is almost as noticeable as high-definition versus standard definition on your TV – you can be sure that we here at Menos Malo are very likely to be at a movie theater at least twice a month.

Unfortunately, movie theaters are death traps when it comes to food.

So, what to do what to do?

We at Menos Malo spend a great deal of time in airports and airplanes. Enough that we have learned some tricks towards a less bad approach regarding the food options at airports.

Patience is a virtue

The ostrich wants out.

Let’s first agree on one thing, airports are chock full of really, really, really bad for you eating options.  Unfortunately, there is a reason for that: (more…)

I don’t know about you, but no matter how healthy I want to be, there are still some cravings that I just can’t ignore. One of them is the taste for Kentucky Fried Chicken.

As we all know a few years back Kentucky Fried Chicken started asking the world to call them KFC instead. This was done in order to eliminate the negative connotation that the word “Fried” carried with it. Fast forward another few years and KFC introduced their grilled chicken alternative as another way to further blunt their perception of unhealthy.

And guess what? Their grilled chicken is certainly “Menos Malo” than their Original Recipe counterpart. Take a look at the following table:

KFC: Grilled or Original Recipe?

How do you like your chicken, green, yellow or red?

It has been a long marriage and man did they share some very good times together, but alas not all good things, but many of them, must come to an end.  As such, we are happy to report that in the month of June of the year 2011 the flavor additive known as salt and the city of Buenos Aires have officially split up.

Yes, you heard it right, restaurants in Buenos Aires will no longer offer salt shakers on their tables.  Why?  Because 3.7 million of the inhabitants of Buenos Aires suffer from hypertension.

That Was A Little Salty...

If you are anything like me, some days, okay, most days you don’t have time to make a decent breakfast.  What I end up doing is usually going for a couple of slices of cooked ham.  This actually helps me get through the morning and right on to lunch.

Just a few weeks ago I noticed that Winn-Dixie had a “low sodium” version of their ham so I gave it a shot and it turns out that not only am I saving myself about 150 mg of sodium per slice, but it also has less saturated fat than its 97% fat free counterpart.

Menos Malo Bottom Line: Yes, this ham is still probably not very healthy for me, but it sure is “less bad” than the one with normal sodium.
